A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association in May assessed the weights of more than 15,000 boys and girls aged 9 to 14. Children who had been breast-fed for six months were 20 percent less likely to be overweight. The chances were even lower for kids who had been breast-fed for seven months.
Breast milk is more nutritious than formulas. Even so, this latest study doesn't reveal why it affects a child's future weight, says lead researcher Matthew Gillman, ., associate professor at Harvard Medical School in Boston. But he and other researchers say babies fed from a bottle aren't destined to be heavy; factors like family diet and exercise habits also contribute to the trend.
