A study released at the annual meeting of the American Association for Cancer Research suggested that the herb, black cohosh, may promote the growth of breast cancers, including those that are as yet undetected. "Women who may be at high risk and certainly those who do have breast cancer should proceed with great caution or simply avoid taking black cohosh until we learn if there are ways to circumvent these adverse effects," said Vicki Davis of the Mylan School of Pharmacy at Duquesne University. The study showed mice that got a dose of black cohosh comparable to the dose a woman would take did not show an increase in the number of tumors that developed compared to those that did not take the herb. But those that did develop tumors were almost three times more likely to see them spread. The data suggest that black cohosh may promote progression to metastatic disease in women with early stage breast cancer, the study concluded. Black cohosh has been a popular alternative to hormone- replacement therapy for menopausal women to control hot flashes and other symptoms.
