Physicians from Taiwan reported that 12 patients experienced kidney failure apparently caused by taking Chinese herbs. The three-year study showed these patients had interstitial nephritis (ie, inflamed kidney tissues) and severely damaged kidney tubules. The only thing these patients had in common was that they consumed various Chinese herbs for different reasons, according to the release. Patients took the herbs for three to 18 months. Physicians diagnosed each patient with Chinese herbs nephropathy, a condition first identified in Belgium in 1992 after more than 100 patients taking "slimming herbs" at a weight loss clinic experienced similar unexplained kidney failure. The harmful ingredient was thought to be artistolochic acid, but that was never proven. No common ingredient was identified in the patients from Taiwan. Researchers suggest investigating the possible role of herbal remedies when diagnosing interstitial nephritis of unknown origin.
