In fact, condition-specific remedies are cause for excitement in cough/cold again this year, retailers told Drug Store News. The OTC buyer for Sioux Falls, .-based Lewis Drugs, Troy Claussen, commented, "For the cough/cold season, the Aleve Cold & Sinus did very well for us." Marketing cough/cold remedies to children also was a continuing trend in 2000. McNeil Consumer Healthcare's assistant marketing manager Christine Doria explained, "[Within] the pediatric upper respiratory market, the cough/cold and flu category makes up 78 percent of the entire category. So the need was there," for new children's cough/cold remedies. CVS merchants have noticed the trend as well, according to CVS spokesman Michael DiAngelis. "Suppliers are looking at the children's segment to extend their lines," he said. Last year's lukewarm cold and flu season may have been one of the causes for the slight downturn in sales. The season peaked relatively early during the second week of January 2000 and then declined significantly in the following months. The cold/flu numbers for 2001 will be stronger, as the number of people who caught the bug climbed between 18 percent and 22 percent from last year, according to Gerald Kress of Surveillance Data. On the natural health side, a recent study posted by the consumer publication Prevention magazine placed the number of Americans who consume-vitamin and mineral supplements (including herbal remedies) at 151 million. Of those, 109 million have made vitamins or minerals part of their daily consumption, representing 59 percent of the population. Even so, the natural health segment of cough/cold (zinc, vitamin C and echinacea) is slipping with the exception of acidophilus, an immune-enhancing non-herbal supplement. The category grew almost 8 percent through food, drug and mass channels, reaching more than $ million, powered by category leader/pioneer CNS.
