Nerve cell death in Alzheimer's disease is caused by a failed attempt at cell division, indicates researcher Karl Herrup, Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, Cleveland, Ohio. A significant number of brain cells in Alzheimer's patients have extra copies of chromosomes, showing an attempt at division in cells that are not supposed to do so. This effort is the likely cause of nerve degeneration and dementia associated with the disease. COX-2 drugs are safer than nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory ones, but they have less analgesic effect for treatment of osteoarthritis. According to the American Pain Society, combining these drugs when there is inadequate analgesia from using them alone is a possibility for physicians, depending on a patient's clinical condition. Victims of violence who suffer traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) do just as well in rehabilitation as other TBI victims--unless they are substance abusers. Researcher Jennifer Bogner, Ohio State University, Columbus, reports that patients with substance abuse histories are less satisfied with their lives and their recoveries from such trauma. Vitamin E is important in the formation of red blood cells and protects muscle cell membranes from damage during aerobic exercise such as running, indicates Bruce Craig, professor of physical education, Ball State University, Muncie, Ind. He further indicates that vitamin E supplements may protect muscle cell membranes during resistance training such as weight lifting. Vitamin E also has long been touted as a way to smooth and reduce unsightly scars when applied topically. However, a study at the Department of Dermatology and Cutaneous Surgery, University of Miami, Coral Gables, Fla., showed that such treatment caused discomfort and worsening of symptoms in one-third of those who used it to soften and smooth scarred skin. Eating two servings of fish weekly may increase your levels of HDL ("good") cholesterol, but not if the fish is fried, cautions Pamela Kent, clinical professor of nutrition, The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas. Fatty fish--such as salmon, tuna, sardines, mackerel, and herring--are composed of omega 3 fatty acids, which are essential for normal human growth and development and cannot be manufactured within the body. The heat changes from frying alters these acids' structure, making them less nutritious. Cultured dairy products such as yogurt that contain "healthy bacteria" may offer more than meets the eye, the National Dairy Council reports. Microorganisms called "probiotics," which include various strains of lactic acid bacteria, may improve intestinal tract health, enhance the immune system, reduce allergies and lactose intolerance symptoms, and increase the absorption of various nutrients. Rubbing one's eyes can increase itching for an additional 45 minutes in people with allergies, according to researchers at the Tufts University School of Medicine, Medford, Mass. How you store your toothbrush could affect the quantity of bacteria on it, University of Iowa, Iowa City, researchers point out. When brushes in a study were left uncapped to air-dry overnight after being rinsed, they showed significantly less bacteria than those that had been tightly capped. Search
